Helicobacter pylori is the bacteria linked with stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. H pylori is a known cause of peptic ulcers and stomach cancer and has been classed as a group I carcinogen by the World Health Organization. The medication used to treat H. pylori can have terrible side effects and is often not successful. New research has shown that the bacteria can hide inside yeast cells. Treating the yeast infection can lead to more successful outcomes.
H. pylori treatment is referred to as triple therapy. It typically involves two antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), taken for 7 to 14 days. The antibiotics aim to kill the bacteria, while a PPI is taken twice a day to reduce stomach acid. Reducing stomach acid is supposed to make the bacteria more vulnerable to killing.
More recently studies have shown that H pylori infection also raises the risk of colon cancer. It is a particularly nasty infection that should not be allowed to linger in the body. Killing the infection should be a priority to protect your future health.
If there is an overgrowth of yeast in the body, H pylori bacteria can enter yeast cells which provide a safe hiding place. This makes it more likely that triple therapy will fail and patiets will need to repeat it or take stronger medication. The antibiotics used typically cause a lot of unpleasant side effects such as nausea and disrupted bowel function. They also cause the loss of good gut bugs in the intestines, compromising microbiome diversity.
A meta analysis of research studies has shown that using the good yeast Saccharomyces boulardii in addition to standard treatment improves outcomes for patients. It makes it easier to eradicate H pylori and reduces negative side effects such as bloating, diarrhea, constipation and nausea. Saccharomyces boulardii is a good yeast that helps drive bad yeast such as Candida out of the body.
