You may have heard the word methylation lately and it’s actually one of the most important things happening in your body right now. Doctors are paying increasing attention to it because it plays a major role in keeping you healthy and slowing down the aging process.
Think of methylation as your body’s behind-the-scenes helper. It’s a tiny chemical process that happens roughly a billion times every second inside you, and it keeps countless essential functions running smoothly, from energy production to mood regulation, to getting rid of toxins.
The process works by attaching a small molecule (called a methyl group) to other substances in the body, essentially switching them on so they can do their job properly.

One of methylation’s most important jobs is helping your liver flush out toxins. It works by converting harmful substances which are often fat-soluble and hard to shift into water-soluble ones that your body can easily eliminate through urine, sweat, and bile. Methylation is also essential for producing brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, the ones responsible for feeling happy, calm, and mentally sharp. Poor methylation can mean lower levels of these chemicals, which may contribute to low mood, anxiety, or brain fog.
Good methylation helps protect your telomeres, the protective caps on your DNA that act a bit like the plastic tips on shoelaces. When telomeres are well protected, you age more slowly. There are several common reasons:
Through food: Good food sources of methyl groups include lamb, chicken, liver, eggs, beetroot, spinach, quinoa, and other dark leafy greens. Lightly cooking greens actually makes these nutrients more available.
Through supplements: If you have a genetic variation affecting methylation, standard folic acid supplements may not work well for you. Instead, look for the activated forms — L-methylfolate or folinic acid along with methylcobalamin (the active form of vitamin B12).
Through testing: If you’re concerned, ask your doctor about blood tests for vitamin B12, folate, homocysteine levels (a high reading can signal poor methylation), and MTHFR gene type.
