Magnesium May Help To Protect Your Hearing

Research has shown that magnesium supplementation can help to reduce noise-induced hearing damage.

The study was published in the American Journal of Otolaryngology. Researchers recruited 300 young, healthy, and normal-hearing volunteers who undertook two months of basic military training. The training involved repeated exposure to high levels of impulse noises while the recruits were wearing ear plugs.

This was a placebo-controlled, double-blind study and each individual received either 167 mg of magnesium each day, or a placebo. Noise-induced permanent hearing changes were significantly more frequent and more severe in the placebo group than in the people taking magnesium.

This is interesting, as I see magnesium deficiency in the majority of my patients.

Magnesium is found in green leafy vegetables, nuts and also red meat, but soils in many parts of the world are magnesium-depleted. Also stress, caffeine, sugar, and sweating all deplete the body of magnesium. Unfortunately, there are quite a few occupations in which long-term noise exposure can lead to hearing loss, and we see it quite often in our retired patients.

If your job or lifestyle involves a lot of noise, you may consider a magnesium supplement to protect your hearing.
